There is no better way to enjoy the peace and quiet of the British countryside than to hire a narrowboat on the canals or rivers of the UK, drifting along at a leisurely 3 - 4 mph you are in a different slowed down World. 
The hire boat list on the left has more than  eighty firms who hire out self drive narrowboats, covering most of the canals and rivers in the UK. Most boat hire firms have boats of different lengths starting at about 30' up to a full length narrowboat at 70', and they can cater for up to 12 people.

Whichever area or canal you choose for your holiday you will find a hire base close by. And if you have never been on a narrowboat before don't worry, they are very easy to steer and control and the staff at the the hirebase will give you full instructions on steering the boat, filling up with water, how to work the locks and every aspect of how the boat works. The main thing is that you enjoy your holiday, relaxing in the slowed down world of canals.

Some hire bases have day boat hire, these are smaller boats offering covered accomodation for several people with varying amounts of facilities, some offering cooking facilities and toilets.

If you prefer the rivers and wide open waters of the Norfolk Broads, there are bases there that hire large modern cruisers that have all the facilities you need.

If you prefer a more relaxing holiday, you could try a holiday on a hotel boat, as the name suggests you have your own ensuite room on a boat, meals are provided and you can if you wish help at locks or if you wish to stretch your legs you can walk alongside the boat at a leisurely 2 - 3 mph.
