Essential items when you are cruising

If you are hiring a boat then the hire firm will supply some of these items, check with them what is included with the boat

If you wish to add to this list let me know



Battery Make sure your starter and leisure batteries are fully charged and in good condition
Bedding Sheets, duvets or sleeping bags if you prefer.
Pillows and pillow cases
Boat Hook Boat hook on a short pole
Cleaning Dish cloths, dusters, disinfectant, washing up liquid, tea towels,
dettol spray or similar, bleach, mop, bucket, kitchen-roll
Clothes Clothes and suitable footwear for all weathers
Cutlery Knives, forks, spoons, don't forget the tin-opener
Dishes Cups, beakers, glasses, plates, bowls
Drinks Tea, coffee, milk, water, canned and bottled drinks, spirits, mixers, beer
Entertainment TV, radio, cd, mp3, books, magazines, children's games,
electronic games, family games
First Aid Kit Basic first aid kit for cuts, scratches, stings and bites
Fly Spray Fly spray, midge repellant
Food Personal preference
Fuses Various 240v and 12v fuses
Gas Make sure you have a full spare bottle
Guides Nicholson's and/or Pearson's guides for the area you are cruising
Grease Most boats will have a stern gland greaser, make sure it is full before you leave, spare grease, engine oil, gearbox oil
Hammer Large hammer for knocking mooring pins in
Hosepipe For filling up your water tank
Kettle Kettle for use on gas stoves
Keys Boat keys, BW keys, handcuff key, car and house keys kept in a safe place
Life Jackets For youngsters, none swimmers and everyone on river sections.
Better safe than sorry
Matches Matches or lighter for gas stove
Mooring Pins Mooring pins plus spares and piling hooks
Pans Various pans for use on a gas hob
Phone Chargers If you have an inverter then the normal chargers will do, if not you will need 12v adapters either cigar lighter or 2 pin types
Personal Hygeine Soap, shower-gel, flannel, towels, shaver, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet-rolls
Pets If you take your pet boating (and you should), don't forget pet food, lead, brush, dishes
Pole Long pole for pushing away from the side if you get grounded
Ropes Fore and aft ropes, and one or two centre ropes
Suncream You may be lucky and need this
Toilet Blue Depending on the type of toilet you have, you may also need fluid for the top tank if you have one fitted
Torch A torch and candles for if the power goes
Tool Kit Basic tool kit, screwdrivers, pliers, wire-cutters etc
Water Make sure your tank is full before you leave
Wet Weather Gear You will more than likely need these
