Elsie Barge 'Boaty Bits'

Elsie has spent most of her life on the water. Her home is Narrowboat ''Gower' moored at Yarwell Mill on the River Nene. 
Gower is a 70' working boat and has spent much of her working life on the Grand Union Canal carrying cloth for 'the Cut Cloth Company'
Nowadays she can be seen regularly trading between Peterborough and Oundle.
Elsie began painting over twenty years ago. Her traditional style has been inspired by the boat painters of the past and she is keen to promote the importance of keeping this precious part of our British Heritage alive.

On this site you will find traditional hand painted canalware. All the items on this web site are painted by Jane Selkirk. Jane has many years of experience within canalware decoration. She originally trained as a watercolour artist but then became a live-aboard and was soon attracted to roses and castles, especially the more realistic "knobstick"style roses of Bill Hodgson.

And because of her outstanding talent she has been accepted by the Waterways Craft Guild as a Journeyman decorative painter.

 I have recently moved from the Lake District where I did many watercolour paintings of the Cumbrian lakes and fells. I now work mostly in acrylics on canvas which I find more flexible as a medium.
