Every narrowboat built by JD Boats has its own character which is developed by consultation at every phase with the eventual Owner. Therefore, it is impossible to illustrate all of the possible variations that can be implemented and show how they look.
As a guide, however, the fitouts illustrated should be thought of as being a basic starting point for fitout appropriate for the class of narrowboat shell.
A boat built to a standard design will always be cheaper to produce than one built to a design tailored to suit individual requirements but we have always taken the view that our clients should have the boat they want, not the boat we think they should have.

Kate Narrowboat Building

Northern Marine Services

I started Northern Marine Services in 1990 and worked fitting out boats on a sub-contract basis for some time for a number of builders.
In 2000 I finally took the bit between my teeth and with the help of a substantial loan from the bank and the selling of our own boat, I then designed and built a 50ft narrow boat which I named “Mystery” and took it to the IWA national festival in Milton Keynes to show.
The boat sold soon after the show but I could have sold it three times over. Since then the business has gone from strength to strength, mainly on recommendations from delighted customers. (Letters of commendation from these customers are available).

Piper Boats

The Piper name in boatbuilding was established in 1969 when David Piper started his narrowboat building business.
Now, over 40 years later David's son Simon operates Piper Boats, the UK's leading manufacturer of inland waterway craft for use throughout Europe.
Our 17,000 square feet manufacturing facility is based in Biddulph in North Staffordshire and each of  the 1000 Piper boats in the water today are steeped in tradition (and still going strong with some over 40 years old!)

Price Fallows

Price fallows produces narrow boat shells in three styles comprising of Traditional, Semi- Traditional and Cruiser lengths of up to 70 feet.
Also available are wide beam shells also in styles of Traditional, Semi - Traditional and Cruiser with widths of 10 feet 3 ins, 11 feet and 12 feet and all up to 70 feet in length.
We can also produce single piece base plates up to 58 feet long with corresponding hull sides, cabin sides and roof plates.

From the construction of the steel shell to the delivery of the finished boat, all work is carried out by skilled craftsmen in our workshops at Glascote Basin.
We are probably best known for our traditionally-styled boats with  engine room forward of a boatman's cabin, but we are equally happy to fit a modern Beta 43 engine in the stern while keeping our traditional look outside.

In 1999 Thanetcraft achieved its 50th year of building aluminium boats.
When we first started after the last war, aluminium alloy was virtually unknown as a boat building material. So from relatively humble beginnings with children's Paddle boats we progressed through to larger craft such as RowPunts & RowBoats, FishingPunts & WorkBoats, Catamarans and Floating Platforms, for diverse markets within local authorities, public utilities such as the water industry through to the countryside with its estates.
Thanetcraft also built assault craft which were employed by our forces in the Malaysian campaign.

Andrew Hooke graduated from Loughborough University in 1994 with an Honours Degree in Industrial Design and Technology.
In 1997 he formed the company 'Woodworks' with the support of the Prince's Youth Business Trust, and in 1999 won their Simon Whitehouse award for business achievement.
Since the very beginning Woodworks have produced individual 'one-off' boats to meet the taste and requirements of their customers.
We will work with you to achieve the optimum layout for your needs and priorities, and encourage your close involvement during the construction.
We will work with most boat builders, but obviously prefer quality steelwork which compliments our interiors.
We are members of the British Marine Federation and of the Canal Boatbuilders Association. This keeps us informed of the latest legislation and enables us to use the BMF contract for the construction of your boat.
